Web Services technology is a platform-independent, standards-based means of enabling asynchronous access to APIs.  Primary components of Web Services are:

+         Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP)

+         Web Services Description Language (WSDL)

+         Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI)

Additional standards (e.g., security, interface description, process description language, etc.) are expected to be included in the Web Services specification soon.
